San Miguel booked the first seat in the semifinal round via 16-point rout of Converge, 121-105, Sunday in the quarterfinals of the PBA Season 47 Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Cameron Clark paced the Beermen with 40 points on 16-of-26 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from the stripe. The former NLEX import hauled down 13 boards, issued 3 assists and rejected 1 shot in 43 minutes of action.
The league’s winningest franchise advanced to the final four and will take on the winner of the quarterfinal series between Brgy. Ginebra and NLEX. The FiberXers, on the other hand, capped off their first year in the pro league with three successive quarterfinal exits.
“Nothing comes easy now. It’s the playoffs. We had a hard time against Converge today and I’m expecting we’re gonna have a hard time in the semifinals. So we just have to prepare, prepare, prepare,” said SMB coach Jorge Gallent during the post-game presser.
“We just watched his last film, when he played about a month ago. That was the only basis that we could scout him. We knew he was very aggressive and a good three-point shooter so we prepared for that defensively,” he added on Converge’s one and done reinforcement Tom Vodanovich.
CJ Perez finished with a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds in addition to 5 assists, 5 steals and a block. Vic Manuel contributed 20 points on a perfect 9-of-9 field goal shooting and 2-of-2 from the 15-foot line. Jericho Cruz added 12 points while Mo Tautuaa and Marcio Lassiter chipped in 8 and 7 markers, respectively.
Vodanovich paced Converge with 39 points spiked by 6-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc. The 28-year old member of New Zealand’s national basketball team added 10 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal to his tally. Maverick Ahanmisi came through with 18 points while Justin Arana, Alec Stockton and Aljun Melecio contributed 14, 12 and 11 markers, respectively.
