Beermen storm back from 19 down, complete semis sweep of Elasto Painters

San Miguel pulled off a remarkable comeback to secure a spot in the PBA 48th Season Philippine Cup Finals, rallying from a 19-point deficit to defeat Rain or Shine, 107-100, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.

CJ Perez’s clutch three-pointer with 25.7 seconds remaining gave San Miguel a crucial four-point lead, sealing their victory over Rain or Shine and completing a 4-0 sweep in their best-of-seven semifinal series.

June Mar Fajardo’s pivotal follow-up basket put the Beermen ahead, 101-100, while Don Trollano’s 20 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, played a significant role in the comeback effort.

Perez led the charge for San Miguel with 25 points, overshadowing Gian Mamuyac’s impressive 30-point performance for Rain or Shine.

“The players just didn’t quit,” said SMB coach Jorge Gallent. “They really played well especially at the end of the fourth. They wanted to end the series now that’s why they played really hard entering the fourth quarter. Kudos to them.”

The Beermen will now advance to the finals for the second time this season, facing either Meralco or Brgy. Ginebra in the championship round.

Fajardo showcased his dominance with 17 points, 23 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and three blocks, helping propel the Beermen to victory after trailing 73-54 in the third quarter.

Despite a valiant effort from Rain or Shine, including solid contributions from Mamuyac, Adrian Nocum, Santi Santillan, Anton Asistio, and Beau Belga, the Elasto Painters fell short in the end.
