Bossing pummel import-less Beermen
Blackwater snapped its two-game slump in emphatic fashion, decisively defeating San Miguel, 111-94, just in time to reignite its playoff aspirations in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Facing considerable pressure, the Bossing displayed remarkable poise and determination to overcome a San Miguel squad that, despite being import-less, proved to be a formidable opponent. With this victory, Blackwater improved its record to 4-5, significantly boosting its chances for the coveted fourth and final quarterfinals slot in Group B.
Currently, Blackwater is tied with NLEX at the same 4-5 record for that critical fourth position, although NLEX enjoys a slight edge with a +6 point differential.
With this context, the Bossing will need to rely on some luck, hoping the Road Warriors stumble against the Barangay Ginebra Kings on Sunday, while also securing a win in their final elimination match against the top-seeded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Monday to clinch their playoff berth.
Import George King was the standout performer, exploding for an impressive 49 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, playing a pivotal role in fending off a fierce third-quarter rally from the Beermen before Blackwater extended its lead in the latter part of the game.
Barefield also contributed significantly with 14 points, delivering timely shots that kept the Bossing afloat during key moments against an initial surge from San Miguel.
The Bossing started strong, establishing a comfortable lead of 13 points in the first half at 41-28. However, the Beermen threatened to close the gap, narrowing it to just one point at 56-57 midway through the third quarter.
It was at this juncture that Barefield hit a crucial three-pointer, halting the momentum of San Miguel. King then took charge, ensuring Blackwater maintained its lead as they finished the quarter with an 11-4 run to secure an 85-72 advantage heading into the final period.
From that point on, the floodgates opened for Blackwater, as they surged ahead to build a lead that ballooned to as high as 25 points in the fourth quarter.
For San Miguel, June Mar Fajardo recorded his typical double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort. CJ Perez added 21 points, while Terrence Romeo chipped in 15.
The Beermen concluded their eliminations with a 6-4 record, missing out on the opportunity to secure the top seed. Depending on the outcome of the Ginebra-NLEX matchup, San Miguel could potentially finish in either the second or third spot in Group B.
