Devon Scott insists Scottie Thompson fouled him during the final play

San Miguel import Devon Scott received the inbound pass from Chris Ross during the final play of the game featuring the Beermen and Brgy. Ginebra last Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The 28-year Scott, who is the team’s 3rd reinforcement in the ongoing PBA Season 47 Commissioner’s Cup, fumbled the ball and eventually lost it after being doubled-up by Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson.

Brownlee secured the leather and held on to it until the buzzer sounded to hand San Miguel its 4th defeat in 7 outings.

Scott, however, felt that a foul should’ve been called on Thompson which would’ve resulted in two free throws for him since the Gin Kings were already in the penalty.

“Honestly, the last possession, I played a lot of basketball in different places. That’s a foul anywhere else in the world,” said Scott.

“There’s no way in the world of basketball any player can just run through any player to get the basketball and not be a foul,” he added.

Despite the non-call, the 6-foot-9 native of Columbus, Ohio clarified that the defending champs shouldn’t be even in that precarious situation had they exerted more effort in protecting the 19-point lead, 82-63, which they established early in the payoff period after a jumper by Vic Manuel.

“Don’t get me wrong. It was our fault that we are in this position. I should have been better down the stretch and made it to where we are not in that position in a back-and-forth game. I should have been better,” explained Scott.

“But, that play is a foul. If that same play happens with me, and I do that to him, it’s a foul. But the refs didn’t see it that way. We didn’t get the ball and the game is over, we lost,” he added.

Scott, who played without relief and finished with 26 points and 21 boards, still felt that he let the team down by missing a lot of shots.

“They made a good run down the stretch. I felt we were playing some good defense but we were turning the ball a little bit and missing some shots, me included. I missed a lot of bunnies right at the rim. But at the end of the day, they did what they were supposed to do. They made their run. They made big shots down the stretch.”

It was a painful setback but it will serve its purpose in the team’s quest to defend the title.

“It’s a tough loss. But at the end of the day, my mentality is you never lose. You always learn. We learned a lot of lessons today.”
