Gin Kings move on cusp of Finals after Game 2 rout of Beermen

Brgy. Ginebra started off strong and fended off repeated comeback attempts by San Miguel to take Game 2 of the semifinals with plenty to spare, 121-103, Sunday night in the PBA Season 47 Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

The Gin Kings opened the match with an 18-1 tear and never looked back. They outscored their opponents from first to third quarter before relaxing a bit in the payoff period. The Beermen, on the other hand, never tasted the lead and trailed by as much as 24. The Jorge Gallent-mentored squad was able to trim the deficit to 8 after a three-pointer by Mo Tautuaa halfway into the third frame but it proved to be their last stand.

The victory gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series with Game 3 scheduled on Wednesday, March 29, 3:00pm at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Scottie Thompson came through with a triple-double performance of 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. He was 6-of-6 from the 15-foot line and also finished with 3 steals, 2 blocks with no turnovers in 37 minutes of action.

“It’s a short series, so if you can get the first two, it’s really, really hard to do and they did,” said Brgy. Ginebra coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.

“We got comfortable, but these guys just toughened up and focused on making stops to be able to extend our lead again. I’m totally shocked by this game in terms of how well we played. Shocked and pleased,” he added.
