Hotshots pull off breakthrough Finals win over Beermen

Magnolia made its presence felt in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup Finals for the first time, pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat San Miguel, 88-80, on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

This marked the Hotshots’ breakthrough victory in the best-of-seven championship series.

After the Beermen closed the gap to 65-62 on a pair of free throws by Don Trollano with under 10 minutes left, the Hotshots responded with an 11-0 blitz powered by three consecutive three-pointers to seize a 76-62 lead. Bennie Boatwright ended the run with a layup for San Miguel, but Ian Sangalang quickly countered with a scoop shot to make it 78-64 Hotshots.

Boatwright scored five straight points to cut the deficit to 84-75, but Paul Lee put the dagger in with a floater at the 1:55 mark to extend the lead back to 11 at 86-75. The Beermen were held under 100 points for the first time in the finals. The loss also snapped their 11-game winning streak.

Six Hotshots scored in double figures, led by Mark Barroca’s 20 points. Lee added 12 off the bench, while Tyler Bey, Ian Sangalang and Aris Dionisio each had 11. Jio Jalalon chipped in 10.

Boatwright paced the Beermen with 27 points and 13 rebounds, but had 8 turnovers. CJ Perez contributed 16 points.

The Hotshots led by as many as 13 in the first half before the Beermen rallied to trail by just 5 entering the fourth. But Magnolia’s staunch defense took over again, powering a 17-6 run to start the quarter for a 16-point advantage at 80-64.

The Hotshots will attempt to even the series at 2 games apiece when they meet the Beermen again in Game 4 on Friday, February 9, 7:30pm at the same venue.
