Hotshots survive Beermen, stay unbeaten

Magnolia extended its unbeaten streak to seven games in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup after overcoming a tough challenge from an undermanned San Miguel side, winning 94-90 at the PhilSports Arena on Sunday night.

After an impressive performance of 26 points and 22 rebounds against the Blackwater Bossing on December 6, Magnolia’s star import Tyler Bey continued his dominance by recording another impressive double-double with 31 points and 21 rebounds.

James Laput provided valuable support to Bey, making his presence felt in the paint against the Beermen who were missing June Mar Fajardo, Simon Enciso and Terrence Romeo. Laput contributed 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Jio Jalalon delivered a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

Despite Magnolia holding a comfortable 10-point lead, 90-80, with just 2:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, San Miguel refused to back down. They launched an 8-0 run, including a three-pointer from Jericho Cruz, narrowing the Beermen’s lead to just two points, 90-88.

Aris Dionisio put an end to Magnolia’s dry spell by making two successful free throws. However, San Miguel’s import, Ivan Aska, quickly responded with a basket, bringing the Beermen within just 2 points at 92-90 with only 8 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for San Miguel, their attempt at a late-game comeback fell short as Dionisio once again made two crucial free throws in the next play, securing the victory for Magnolia.

Dionisio contributed 10 points while Mark Barroca also added 10.

On the other hand, Aska was the top scorer for San Miguel with 29 points, while Cruz and Mo Tautuaa contributed 16 and 12 points respectively.

CJ Perez had a disappointing game for the Beermen, managing to score only 4 points while shooting a dismal 1-of-15 from the field.

San Miguel suffered their second consecutive loss and fell to 3-3.
