June Mar Fajardo set to return on January 12

San Miguel will have a very positive start to the new year as main man June Mar Fajardo is set to make his much-anticipated comeback on January 12, when the Beermen take the court against the already-eliminated Blackwater Bossing. The match will be the reigning Philippine Cup champs’ last in the elimination round.

The league’s one and only seven-time MVP has been absent from San Miguel’s previous five matches due to a fractured left wrist which he sustained during the team’s 115-110 victory against Rain or Shine on November 30.

Despite the absence of Fajardo, the Beermen were able to secure victories in their last three games, enabling them to hold a joint position with Brgy. Ginebra for fourth and fifth place in the team standings at 6-3. This streak keeps them in the running for a spot in the top 4 in the next round which carries a twice-to-beat advantage.

The 34-year-old Fajardo has made a good progress in his recovery and is expected to be fit enough to play against the Bossing, as the team gets ready for the playoffs of the season-opening conference.

“That’s the plan,” said SMB team manager Gee Abanilla during an interview with The Manila Times, in reference to Fajardo’s return to action after an absence of more than a month.

Having Fajardo back in the team will greatly benefit San Miguel. This comes after their recent decision to replace Ivan Aska with NBA G League veteran Bonnie Boatwright.

On Christmas Day, Boatwright made an impressive debut for the Beermen, filling the stat sheet with 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Beermen dominated the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters and coasted to a 117-96 victory.

Fajardo’s strength in the paint could be complimented by Boatwright’s capability to space the floor as he has proven to be more of an outside player.

Prior to going down with the injury, Fajardo has been posting MVP-like numbers of 19.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game.
