Rain or Shine outlasts San Miguel in road game as John Holland unimpressive in debut
Rain or Shine survived San Miguel’s spirited 4th quarter fightback and kept its flickering playoff hopes alive by pulling off a huge 91-85 win, Saturday in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Five Elasto Painters, led by Javee Mocon and import Richard Ross, scored 10 points or more as the Caloy Garcia-mentored squad improved to 3-7 while the Grand Slam-chasing team dropped to 5th place in the team standings with a 6-4 card.
The 24-year old Mocon, who was chosen as the Best Player of the Game, had 16 points and 14 rebounds while Ross likewise finished with 16 to go along with 12 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Beermen trailed by as much as 22, 43-65, with 4 minutes left in the 3rd period but managed to cut the deficit to 17 going into the payoff period.
After the Elasto Painters established another 20-point advantage courtesy of a Rey Nambatac triple with the game clock down to 5:50, the Beermen went on a 20-2 tear capped by a three-pointer by Arwind Santos to cut the lead down to two, 85-87, with still 1:51 to go in the match.
The 2019 Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup champions, however, failed to score for the rest of the way and absorbed their 3rd loss in the last 4 games.
Gabe Norwood and Rey Nambatac contributed 15 points apiece while Jewel Ponferada had 10.
Chris Ross paced the Beermen with 19 points while hometown hero June Mar Fajardo accounted for 17 markers, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Santos finished with 14 while Alex Cabagnot chipped in 9.
Debuting import John Holland had an unimpressive start as the NBA G-League veteran could only come up with 10 points and 10 boards in 37 minutes of action.
San Miguel’s last game of the elimination round will be against TNT on Wednesday, November 20 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
