San Miguel drops James Sena, Wendell Comboy to make room for Jericho Cruz

San Miguel made sure there’s room for Jericho Cruz by dropping guard Wendell Comboy and reserve big man James Sena from the active roster.

The 31-year old Cruz, who just recently signed a three-year deal with the flagship team of the SMC group, declined an extension offer from Yeng Guiao and the NLEX Road Warriors in order to reunite with college mentor Leo Austria. He is expected to make his SMB debut on Thursday, March 3 against the skidding Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Comboy was placed on the injured/reserved list while Sena in now an unrestrictred free agent with rights to salary.

New import Shabazz Muhammad along with Cruz will be part of the Beermen’s 15-man roster for the ongoing 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup.

The 24-year old Comboy was taken by the Elasto Painters with the 23rd overall pick in the 2019 PBA draft but was left unsigned. He was enlisted by the Beermen the following month but hardly saw action.

Sena, meanwhile, was picked up by the team last year along with Fonzo Gotladera to serve as back-ups for main man June Mar Fajardo.

Cruz, just like Rodney Brondial, is a member of the 2014 PBA draft class. The duo played for Austria when he was still the head coach of the Adamson Falcons.

Brondial, just like Cruz, turned down an offer from his mother team (Alaska) and immediately signed with the league’s winningest franchise.
