San Miguel drops Ronald Tubid from roster
San Miguel has formally dropped veteran guard Ronald Tubid from its roster for the upcoming 2020 Philippine Cup.
The 38-year old Tubid is now an unrestricted free agent after team management opted not to renew his contract which expired last month.
The 16th overall pick during the 2003 draft hasn’t attended the team’s practices since the All-Filipino defending champs opened training camp first week of January.
Tubid’s status with the team became complicated after he got involved in a brawl during practice last November 17 together with Arwind Santos, Kelly Nabong and then-import Dez Wells.
Wells immediately left the country after the incident while the three locals were slapped by team management with indefinite suspension.
The untimely episode ultimately ended the team’s quest for a triple crown after they were given the boot in the quarterfinal round by eventual champion Brgy. Ginebra.
Nabong was eventually dealt to NorthPort in exchange for Russel Escoto while Santos, who still has an existing two-year contract, was reinstated in time for the team’s start of preparations for the upcoming season.
Tubid and Nabong were also involved during the ‘Spider-Man’ incident which happened during Game 5 of the 2019 Philippine Cup Finals. The two were slapped by the league with a three-game suspension on top of a P75,000 fine.
In his combined 5 years with the team, Tubid has been a part of 7 championships.
