San Miguel def Converge, 102-95 [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup QF Game 1 | Sep. 26, 2024]
Facing the challenge for a higher seeding on the last playdate of the elimination round, the Converge FiberXers now stand at a pivotal crossroads – a chance to shine or a test of resilience – as they prepare to clash with the formidable San Miguel Beermen in a best-of-five showdown during the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals.
After a disappointing 12th-place finish in both the Commissioner’s Cup and Philippine Cup last season, the FiberXers have fought their way back into the playoff scene. However, now they must confront June Mar Fajardo and his powerhouse teammates as they aim for a deeper run in the postseason.
Interestingly, it was at the hands of San Miguel that Converge faltered in two quarterfinal matches during the 2022-23 season.
Yet, the FiberXers are undeterred by the prospect of another playoff encounter with the Beermen.
In their latest outing, Converge triumphed over an injury-depleted Hotshots team, 89-82, effectively securing their position to face the second-seeded Beermen, alongside top-seeded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
With this victory, the FiberXers carry momentum into the opener of their best-of-three series against San Miguel. Fans can catch the action at 7:30 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The spotlight will be on Converge’s Jalen Jones as he squares off against San Miguel’s newly signed EJ Anosike.
The FiberXers have claimed victory in their last two games with Jones, who stepped in as a substitute for original import Scotty Hopson, now sidelined due to injury.
Anosike, an insurance import, will now don the Beermen jersey as a replacement for Jordan Adams, who is also dealing with health issues.
The Nigerian-American Anosike, a product of Cal State-Fullerton, is a promising young professional who has showcased his talents in both the Belgian and Chinese leagues.
