San Miguel def NLEX, 119-114 [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup | Sep. 11, 2024]

San Miguel and NLEX are set to face off in a pivotal rematch in the PBA Governors’ Cup eliminations at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium this Wednesday, with both teams eager to improve their standing in a fiercely competitive five-way battle for the four quarterfinal berths from Group B.

As of now, Rain or Shine leads the group with a record of 4-1, closely followed by Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel, both at 3-2, while NLEX and Blackwater sit at 3-3. Phoenix Super LPG lags significantly behind at 0-5.

The Beermen currently hold second place in the standings after a thrilling 113-112 victory over the Elasto Painters, thanks to a dramatic buzzer-beater by June Mar Fajardo.

Conversely, NLEX has slipped to a tie for fourth after suffering two consecutive defeats to the Gin Kings, falling 91-119, followed by a narrow loss to the Bossing, 109-110.

Interestingly, coach Jong Uichico’s squad last triumphed over the Beermen, pulling off a hard-fought 112-108 overtime win during a road game in Cagayan de Oro. The Road Warriors rebounded in the extra period after a missed opportunity to close out the game in regulation, with key contributions from Jhan Nermal, Richie Rodger, and Robbie Herndon.

Myke Henry was instrumental in that victory, delivering an impressive 33-point performance with six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks, while Robert Bolick added 20 points. However, Henry has since faced increased defensive pressure and has struggled to replicate that success in subsequent games.

Meanwhile, San Miguel’s Jordan Adam has been consistently outstanding, with a remarkable 41-point game that was crucial in securing their last victory against the previously unbeaten Rain or Shine, highlighting his contribution alongside Fajardo’s clutch shot at the buzzer that sealed the win.
