Shabazz Muhammad pulled off a solid double-double of 33 points and 21 rebounds as San Miguel overpowered Rain or Shine, 104-100, in the elimination round of the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup, Thursday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The 29-year old former NBA player also had 6 assists and a block in 43 minutes of action as the Beermen registered their 6th win in 10 outings while dealing the Elasto Painters their 7th defeat in 10 starts.
The victory assured the flagship team of the SMC group of a ticket to the next round while keeping its chances for a twice-to-beat advantage alive.
“Yung energy niya, ibang-iba. In our first loss with him, he was so disappointed, and he told us that he will bounce back. That’s why he was so focused in this game,” said SMB head coach Leo Austria of his prized import during the post-game press conference.
“We know the situation right now — if you lose, you won’t have a good chance to get into the quarterfinals. But with this win, I think meron na kaming chance,” he added.
Vic Manuel added 18 points while Terrence Romeo chipped in 17. June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez scored 14 and 11 markers, respectively.
Henry Walker paced the Elasto Painters with 23 points while Beau Belga, Rey Nambatac and Jewel Ponferada contributed 19, 17 and 15 points, respectively.
The Beermen will shoot for win number 7 on Saturday, March 5 against the Meralco Bolts.
