San Miguel proved to be steadier down the stretch against a much-improved Blackwater side and pulled off an 110-107 overtime win Sunday in the elimination round of the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
June Mar Fajardo and Moala Tuatuaa joined hands in the extra period and dropped 10 of Beermen’s 13 total output to lead the flagship team of the SMC group to its 5th straight victory and 8th in 9 outings.
The 32-year old Fajardo finished with 25 points in almost 48 minutes of action. He added a game-high 18 rebounds as well as 3 assists, 3 steals and a block.
Jericho Cruz followed up his 30-point performance against TNT with 25 to go with 4 boards and 4 dimes while CJ Perez rounded up the trio of 20-point scorers with 23.
“Ang hirap manalo,” said SMB coach Leo Austria during the post-game press conference.
“After watching their previous games, I know this will be a tough game for us,” he added. “Blackwater showed some character in the endgame. They played really hard and clever and alam nila ginagawa nila. Maganda ang executions nila. We’re lucky we were able to pull off a win.”
Tautuaa ended up with 17 markers while Marcio Lassiter and Robbie Herndon chipped in 5 points apiece.
Former Beerman Rashawm McCarthy paced the Bossing with 22 points while Rey Suerte and Baser Amer added 18 and 17 points, respectively. Jvee Casio scored 15 while 2022 top overall pick Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser contributed 11.
San Miguel takes a 3-day break before taking on winless Terrafirma on Thursday, July 14, 5:15pm at the same venue.
