San Miguel succeeded where others previously failed in the PBA 3×3 Third Conference – beating rampaging TnT in the battle for leg honors.
With Jeff Manday and Ken Bono igniting a lethal 14-5 salvo towards the finish, the Beermen upended the Tropang Giga, 21-12, to capture the Leg 5 plum Sunday at Robinsons Place Antipolo.
Manday finished with seven points while the hulking Bono banged in six as the Beermen denied TnT of its fourth leg win of the conference and scored a breakthrough for themselves in the season-ending tournament.
Wendell Comboy and Bam Gamalinda contributed five and three, respectively, to help coach Boycie Zamar’s troops zoom to the top and bank P100,000.
“Sobrang magandang gift ito for us lalo na Fathers’ Day,” said Gamalinda. “Lagi naming nire-remind ang isa’t isa ‘don’t stop playing defense,’ doon tayo mananalo, saka yung effort.”
SMB completed a sweep of its six assignments in the two-day competition en route to the leg crown, its first since ruling the second and six stops of the Second Conference.
After going 3-0 in Pool C Saturday, the Beermen hammered out a 21-15 disposal of Barangay Ginebra in the quarterfinals and 21-20 verdict over Cavitex in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game.
San Miguel 21 – Manday 9, Comboy 8, Bono 4, Gamalinda 0.
