WATCH: San Miguel vs Converge QF Game 1 Highlights [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup | Sep. 26, 2024]

San Miguel deftly navigated a late-game surge from Converge, securing a hard-fought 102-95 victory to take an early lead in their quarterfinals series during the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 26.

What began as a routine outing for the dominant Beermen quickly transformed into a nail-biter as they established a commanding 16-point cushion late in the final quarter, only to endure a tense finish before ultimately claiming a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-five series.

June Mar Fajardo showcased his formidable presence, delivering a stellar double-double performance with 25 points and 16 rebounds, complemented by three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Meanwhile, newcomer EJ Anosike made an impressive debut, contributing 28 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists in a solid showing.

The Beermen maintained a comfortable double-digit lead for most of the second half and appeared poised for a decisive victory after stretching their advantage to 16 points at 97-81 with just over three minutes remaining in the game.

However, the FiberXers were not ready to concede defeat, launching a fierce 14-2 run over a three-minute span that narrowed the gap to just five points at 99-95.

Crucial defensive stands, combined with steady free-throw shooting from Anosike and CJ Perez, ultimately proved vital in securing the win for San Miguel.

Though Perez struggled to find his usual scoring rhythm, finishing with 11 points, he also contributed significantly with six rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and a steal. Kris Rosales matched his output with 11 points of his own.
