RJ Jazul fired a career-high 33 points highlighted by 9-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc to power Phoenix Super LPG past San Miguel, 110-103, Thursday night in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup restart at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
The former Letran Knight took over main man Matthew Wright who was held below his usual production and dropped 23 markers in the payoff period which pulled the game away from the Beermen’s grasp for good.
“We know that SMB is a championship-caliber team. They’ve been to a lot of battles. Kami bata pa kami as a team so I keep reminding everyone, including myself, to do what we prepared for, to do our gameplan,” said Fuel Masters head coach Topex Robinson during the post-game presser.
“I just love how our guys are stepping up. Like RJ Jazul finally took over when Matt and Calvin were kinda guarded. It’s just nice to have those guys stepping up in this kind of games,” he added.
The loss snapped San Miguel’s 4-game winning streak and dropped the defending champs into a tie with the Meralco Bolts for 4th spot in the team standings with identical 5-3 records.
Moala Tuatuaa led the Beermen with 21 points while vets Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter contributed 20 markers apiece. Arwind Santos added 11 but shot a measly 1-of-11 from long distance. Von Pessumal chipped in 10.
