Rey Nambatac didn’t stop fighting, though, firing blanks through the first 47 minutes of play.
He was rewarded in the end as he drained his lone basket – a three-pointer at that – from a broken play in the closing seconds, allowing Rain or Shine to escape with an 87-83 win over San Miguel Beer in the PBA Philippine Cup bubble play at the AUF Gym powered by Smart 5G in Angeles City, Pampanga Wednesday.
“Coming into the game without tune-up matches, we knew it’s gonna be a game of adjustments.
We started well but knowing San Miguel, they would fight to the end. Good thing we got that big shot from Rey (Nambatac),” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia.
The Elasto Painters opened the game with a 16-0 tear and dictated the pace most of the way but needed Nambatac’s three-pointer in the last 12 seconds to fend off the late-charging Beermen.
Rain or Shine got off to a winning start while foiling San Miguel’s bid at a follow-up to its win over Magnolia in the season inaugurals versus Magnolia last March 8.
Sophomore Javee Mocon starred in Rain or Shine’s swashbuckling start, had crucial free throws at the finish and wound up with a solid all-around game with 25 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block against one turnover.
