Alex Cabagnot announced his entry in the PBA Bacolor play with a 20-point game highlighted by the game-winning basket as San Miguel Beer edged NorthPort, 88-87, in Game One of their Philippine Cup best-of-three quarterfinals face-off.

In an answer to Robert Bolick’s three-pointer from way, way out in the previous play, Cabagnot shook off the defense of Sidney Onwubere for a short jumper to give the Beermen the crucial head start in the short series.

“I just got in last night (in the Bacolor semi-bubble), and I’m thankful to my coach who gave me the trust,” said Cabagnot.

“I’m also thankful to my teammates, they didn’t mind me playing these minutes (coming from a long layoff). I had my apprehensions but in full fashion of our coach being a great coach, he gave me the confidence,” Cabagnot added.

“I’m confident in my players being ready to play once they show up. For Alex, he’s familiar with that situation. Last five seconds, alam nya yon; bilang niya yon,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.

Austria made Cabagnot the first option in their last play in the last 5.1 seconds while down at 86-87. A grizzled warrior he is, Cabagnot hardly flinched and delivered.

Thus, the Beermen now enjoy a virtual twice-to-beat advantage going to Game Two.
